King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) yesterday signed a joint executive program with a Syrian civil society organization to build and equip a complex in Saraqib, Idlib Governorate, in a project funded by a donor. The complex will include a health center providing daily medical consultations, hemodialysis, reproductive health services, and laboratory testing, along with community facilities that expand access to medical care for people in Saraqib. Shops will also be built on the site, with their revenue funding the complex’s running costs so that services can continue, a model that ties humanitarian work to long-term sustainability. The…

As schools across the UAE reinforce rules around student appearance for the new academic year, some boys may have to rethink their usual trip to the barber. Several schools are restricting extreme or shaved hairstyles, including cuts where parts of the head are shaved with a razor or blade while other sections are left longer. Such partially shaved styles can fall under ‘qaza‘, while barbers are also seeing families move away from skin-level fades as they look for school-friendly alternatives. But that does not mean boys are left with only one or two basic options. Onur, a Turkish master barber at…

From the outside, the first thing you notice is the blue. Rising above Tashkent’s historic Hazrati Imam area, a vast turquoise dome crowns the newly opened Islamic Civilization Center in Uzbekistan. Below it, monumental arched entrances, Qur’anic calligraphy and intricate blue tilework give the building the appearance of something much older than it actually is. Khaleej Times got a closer look inside the centre during the International Media Forum, “Islamic Civilization: A New Perspective, New Discoveries”, held in Tashkent in August, exploring its vast galleries, rare manuscripts and interactive exhibits. Step inside, however, and the experience changes. Digital screens sit…
One minute you are looking for a new series, the next you are comparing six apps, trying to remember where the last season was available and wondering why a football match requires a separate subscription altogether. Streaming was supposed to make viewing simpler. Instead, many UAE households now pay for several platforms at once, with each service holding a different mix of original shows, films, Arabic content, children’s programming and live sport. For UAE viewers, choosing a streaming service is rarely as simple as comparing monthly prices. The catalogue on each platform can differ by country, while live sport is…
Andrea Mirabile, Senior Director of AI Research, Zebra Technologies. Zebra Technologies Corporation, a global leader in digitising and automating workflows to deliver intelligent operations, recently unveiled how a team of its AI researchers have used AI and physics to overcome the simulation-to-real-world data gap when training computer vision models for warehouse shelf-storage, floor and pallet staging and truck loading. By realistically simulating the physical damage, clutter, and chaos of these real-world settings, Zebra’s STRIPES (Sim-to-Real Industrial Perception for Warehouse Scenes) dataset enables computer vision models to perceive with improved levels of accuracy, compared to using only real-life images or traditional synthetic datasets.…
